Scholarships

Eligibility and payment restrictions applicable to all scholarships

Enrollment

Student must be enrolled in graduate studies during the term in which the scholarship is awarded. Students may not receive scholarships while on leave.

To receive a scholarship during Summer Session, students should register for three credits of COLT 601 or COLT 603. Please consult the office manager if you do not qualify for a summer tuition waiver. See the Graduate School website for summer tuition waiver eligibility: https://gradschool.uoregon.edu/node/167

Factors potentially reducing the amount the student receives

  • Other financial aid
Scholarship awards may affect other financial aid, and potentially cause automatic rescission of certain types of aid. For example, scholarships received in a term where the student has secured loans may be used to reduce the loan amount (repay the loan) rather than pass through into the student’s bank account. If you have questions, please contact the Office of Student Financial Aid and Scholarships
  • Tuition & fees
Awards may be affected by past due tuition and fees. If there are charges on the student account, the scholarship will be used to pay those charges before money is passed through to the student’s bank account.
  • Taxes
Awards may be taxed. Scholarship amounts that exceed a student’s educational expense are potential taxable income. The official estimate of student expenses used as a benchmark is published on the Financial Aid website: https://financialaid.uoregon.edu/cost_of_attendance_graduateU.S. citizens have their own responsibility to report their income when they file their tax return. But section 1441 of the Internal Revenue Service code states that a withholding agent is responsible for reporting and withholding, if applicable, scholarship payments made to non-resident aliens. For questions on tax issues, refer to IRS Publication 970, Tax Benefits for Education, http://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/p970.pdf.  Students with complicated tax situations will need to consult with a tax advisor.

Payments

All scholarship awards are deposited into your student account. If you have Direct Deposit set up, then any positive balance will be transferred into your bank account, assuming you meet the above-mentioned conditions. If you do not have direct deposit, a paper check will be issued which you will need to pick up at the Financial Aid office.

Scholarships are awarded for a specific term. If you have received an award letter at least two weeks prior to that term, then the funds should be available at the start of the term. For scholarships awarded during a term for the same term, allow at least two weeks for the funds to become available.
