Summer Writing Fellowship
PURPOSE: The Summer Writing Fellowship is designated to enable students to dedicate the summer to developing a pre-existing conference presentation, seminar paper or dissertation chapter into a publishable essay.
ELIGIBILITY: This award is intended for doctoral students. Excluded from eligibility are students studying for their fall qualifying exams, as well as students who have Summer Session appointments. Students receiving this award must not already be the recipients of significant summer scholarships/fellowships.
AWARD: This $3000 award will be disbursed in two allotments: an initial $2500 will be available at the start of summer term. The remaining $500 will be disbursed when (and only if) the paper has been submitted to a peer-reviewed journal for publication. We would like to have confirmation of this submission before the end of fall term 2020. If you are unable to submit the essay by then, you should indicate to the department head in writing what your plans are for submission. If the paper has not been submitted by the first day of spring term 2021, the $500 will be forfeited.
TO APPLY: E-mail to Jade Fraley, jadef@uoregon.edu, by April 20, 2023 the following documents as PDF attachments:
- Cover letter explaining the proposed writing project, as well as the current degree of progress. (NB: this fellowship will not be awarded if the student’s progress toward the degree will be hindered by it in any way, i.e., if it can be expected to distract from timely completion of the dissertation or from essential language or course study, etc.)
- Signature, on cover letter, from applicant’s primary adviser
- Up-to-date Doctoral Progress Summary and unofficial transcript
- A copy of the seminar paper, conference presentation or dissertation chapter that the student will be developing into a publishable essay.
SELECTION: Applications will be reviewed by the comparative literature tenure-related faculty. The faculty may decide not to award this fellowship if no viable applications are received.
NOTIFICATION: Applicants will be notified of the decision by May 8, 2020.
CONDITIONS: Students receiving this award who qualify for a summer tuition waiver are required to register for at least three credits of COLT 601 or 603 for summer term 2020.
